Zen Marie created a street performance working with local young fashionistas, shop-front sale announcers and his assistant Kagiso Mnisi. Entitled “The Red Carpet”, it consisted of impromptu fashion shows at various locations (Small Street, Plain Street) where both informal and formal commerce intersected. The participants displayed and ‘vogued’ their wear wherever the carpet was laid out. Sound was provided by a portable cd-player.. In a second edition, Marie acted at his alter ego D Khan, and walked through the streets dressed as a dandy, pulling a black roller-suitcase which was in fact a sound system that played Miles Davis at high volume. Assistants ran ahead and rolled out the carpet in dedicated locations for Khan. Both performances instantly drew large audiences, instigating a number of questions around the role of fashion in relation to the performance of identity. Video documentation of both performances as well as a photographic still was displayed at the Art Fair.
