Work-in-Progress for Urban Scenographies:  engaging visually, performatively and experimentally with the found venues and situations in the inner city of Johannesburg. Setting personal, artistic signs that refer to larger social, political and environmental issues. Reaching out with words, statements, intentions, actions and images to intertwine with peoples’ lived reality for a moment in time.

A fenced-off enclosure becomes a particular stage, on which MwangiHutter sightlessly shaves his hair and cuts pieces of his clothes, drawing a large audience of passersby, shop and street-workers. Asking people to trade, he offers a packet of his hair with a scrap of clothing in exchange for writing on his bare skin through the fence. The video was screened during the festival at the Drill Hall, as well as during the Art Fair in the Urban Scenographies booth

For Single Entities outfits were designed based on places constructed and wrought functional for business. Worn by a person, the full body clothing created a merging of the person with the surroundings. It became a commentary on the specific location, texture and use of the environment. Fatou Cissé, Mohamed Abdoulaye Kane and Codou Gueye performed the moment, beautifully feeling their way into the theme of human elasticity in adhering to space and context. The performance videos projected by night served to ‘announce’ the existence of the chosen settings in this unexpected way.

Promesse // Promise

A vivid colored bed sheet was seen hanging out to dry from the top of an unfinished building in an agglomeration of construction sites. So somebody already lives there?

This hint gave rise to the site-specific work Promise: different colored fabrics were hung from several buildings under construction. The splashes of colored cloth fluttering in the wind were like oversize ‘samples’ giving an idea, a promise of how the exterior and interior decoration will be. At the same time they indicated the unseen families presently inhabiting the buildings to guard them while they are being constructed.
