Process

_alexandrieprocessus_86161_alexcafe

// One fo the particularities of the Alexandria residency, it was an order. Aliaa el Geredy, who participated the Douala residency invited ScUrk to accompagny Gudran in the realisation of an artists residency in Alexandria.

// The process was different because of that. Gudran was producing the residency and we were partly curating it, partly.

// We were never really together, time to meet each others was too short, the choice of the artists, especially egyptian, was difficult. And the residency was quite chaotic, in the political context of a dictatorship.

// Without entering in the details about what happened, the main lesson of this uneven project, event though it was very rich in terms of understanding, as it put naked all the complexities and fragilities of the process we are taking on, is to confirm the process and a good knowledge from each others are absolutely essentials for the realisation of such a project. This is the key.

// Here, a serie of mails, and texts about the process of construction of the project.

first of all I thank you for the nice days that I spent with you in Cameroon. In Cameroon we talked about the possibility of continuing the second stage in Alexandria at El Max. Now there is a possibility to host the artists and also funding the project from Ford Foundation. An artists residence for 5 artists, maybe a little bit more persons, next year, in Alexandria, in the fisherman’s place. The idea would be to work with your group on a project, and to enter in your story with that suburb. Maybe the idea would be to work in the same way we made it in Douala, maybe a litte bit different. But for more elements I would prefer the ideas to come also from my friends from douala, and from you, in Alexandria. How to work, and so on, how to make a group of african artists
live in residence, for maybe one month, and create here in Alexandria. You know that place better than me, than us. And I think the best would be to find a way to give one of the five artists from Douala, the possibility to come in Alexandria and create the concept of that residence with you. But if you have any ideas, all of you, its the moment to speak about it. Francois and I will have the possibility to come in Alexandria in next autumn, to see and think. But the best would be one of the Kapsiki to be with us.

La question identitaire et communautaire, quand ils disent « choose artists who already work in art with and trough special communities that had its own culture.

Gudran.
Dear Jc Lanquetinhere are some of the things you need to know :1. El Max – Alexandria – Egypt (The Location)
El-Max is a suburb of Alexandria. Most of its population are fishermen. It is located between El-Werdeyan district – a very populated area of Alexandria; full of industries and leather factories – and El-Agami – an old suburb previously regarded as a summer resort and now a very populated district. It overlooks one of the Alexandria harbour gates.
The place has its own type. It looks as if it were a “Venice of the East”. The houses are built on the banks of an agricultural sewage canal. The banks are high forming a hill upon which the houses are built. The fishing boats are all docked in front of the houses and move from there to the sea.
The uniqueness of the place reflects the uniqueness of the people. It is a closed community with its own history and culture and heritage. However, it has seen hard times, for food is scarce and depends on the weather and whatever the sea brings. There are lots of other problems too; mainly, sewage, rubbish, healthcare, education, poverty, work and play hazards because of the rough nature of the area. Max Now.
Our fist project in the Sayyadin Village of El-Mexx is in its second phase of implementation. During the initial period we conducted research intended to provide us with basic knowledge of the area, the needs and the structural changes that have to be made. We also focused on establishing relations with the residents of the neighbourhood to encourage their participation and gain their support. We have now embarked upon the second phase of the project which has included selecting a number of houses for renovation and painting. The painting is done in an artistic manner by the locals and ourselves. The children of the neighborhoods are active participants in this project.
During the first phase we managed to establish a strong relationship with the local community. We ran a series of art workshops for children aged 5 to 16 years and initiated literacy classes for adults and dropouts taught by trained members of our team. We also organized a series of folk music concerts by musicians from other areas to introduce the community to different cultural traditions. That is in addition to renovating and beautifying twelve houses as part of the initial research.
In the future we plan to build docking grounds along the waterway where the homes are built to help the fishermen park their boats, facilitate movement between the houses, and protect their homes from the water. This will also help to protect the children from the current danger of falling into the water.
The area suffers from a lack of cultural, environmental and social services

2. when a residence like that could happen
in the period between February to April / 2004

3. what is your work camp in next October ?
THE CPD of The Camp is attached with the EMAIL

4. What us would like exactly to happen in our place, what would us like you to do?
• At first : What us would like exactly to happen in our place
• We try it to be an artistic grouping for artists, every artist try to figure the dimensions of the place (fishermen village-El Max-Alexandria) with the help of local people
• we also to make a compose between the local people culture and other cultures through art and preparing the place to be a place where the artistic festivals happened.
• Since we are working in the area from a long time it will be easy for us to link the people of the area with the artists because they already used for dealing with artistic work in there area.
• That is why we are trying to chose artists who already work in art with and through special communities that had it own culture.

• what would us like you to do
• Helping in proposing some African artists that already work in art with and through special communities that had it own culture.
• Co-operating with us to develop the proposed festival ideas.
• Helping in the part concerning FUNDRISING.
• Helping in the festival Directing, Managing and Administration.

De: Jean-Christophe Lanquetin
à: suewill@iafrica.comTo Sue Williamson,My name is Jean Christophe Lanquetin, I’m scenographer and artist,
living in Paris, France. Toma Muteba Luntumbue, from Africalia, and also
Christian Hanussek gave me your email adress.
For five years now, with another Frensh artist, Francois Duconseille
(both of us we are also teaching scenography in the Strasburg school for
Decorative Arts), we are developping a residencies project, named « Urban
Scenography ». The first of these residencies was the result of a 4years
process, a long relationship with a group of 5 artists from Cameroon,
named the Kapsiki Circle, and now we are working also with others
artists and groups from RDCongo, Egypt, Lebanon… The main idea of the
« Urban Scenographies » is to develop artists residencies in urban spaces
of different countries (including Europe), and to live and work all of
us, in the places where the artists live ; developing projects, « in
situ » and give the possibility to inhabitants, and people to think about
their environment, through actions and visions on these places, coming
from artists.
The first of those events happened in Douala/Cameroon, in the end of
2002. It was a one month residency, in an urban area whose name is
NewBell : thirty artists from six countries (Cameroon, RDCongo, Egypt,
Lebanon, Kenya and France) lived and worked here in link with the
inhabitants. The residency ended with a 3 days festival of installations
and performances in the streets, in the houses of New Bell. From that
time, the Cercle Kapsiki group has a permanent place, the Kfactory,
where they can work, organise residencies, exhibitions…. We are
actually preparing a website and a publication about that event and the
process, the way we developed it, the questions, the links with the
artists… which was as important as the residency itself.
My english is not so good to explain the main ideas ot that project but
you will find a text, who speaks about what happened during and after
the residency, (the translation, is shurely better). The main reason why I’m sending you that email today, is because, I saw
in last june your exhibiton in Brussels. After that, I spoke with Toma
Mutaba about you, and about the analogies between some of your works and
the questions we are working on in our projects.

And I’ll be in Joburg soon : as scenographer(stage designer) I’m working
actually on a dance performance choreographed by Faustin Linyekula
(Studios Kabako/RDCongo), and we will perform in Johannesburg (Dance
Umbrella) during the first week of march (from the 1th to the 6). So
I’ll be in Joburg these days and I’would be very pleased to meet you to
talk more in details, give you visual documents and others texts, about
the Douala residency.
And about the next one who will happen in Alexandria (Egypt), next
september, in a fisherman’s place named ElMax (It will be a residency in
link with a group named Gudran, the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, the
Fordfund…) gathering 10 artists coming from african countries
(Cameroon, RDCongo, Kenya…), 10 from arabian countries (Egypt,
LEbanon, Syria, Morroco…) and 5 from France.
We are very seriously thinking about inviting you to participate this
new residency.

I hope to see you in Joburg and talk, I will be easier for me to talk.

Dear Jean-Christophe Lanquetin

Thank you for your email, which I read with much interest. Your project in
Douala with its involvement with local artists and the resulting three day
festival of art sounds as if it was successful for all concerned. I think
the contact of the artists of Africa with each other is critical. I was in
Dakar for the Biennial in 2002, and it was the first time an artist from
Egypt (Moataz Nasr) had participated. This year, I will show the work in
Dakar which you saw in Brussels, although in a much lower tech presentation,
I am sure.

I would indeed be extremely interested in exploring the possibility of
participating in the residency in Alexandria in September. Regrettably, I do
not know if it will be possible for us to meet when you come for the Dance
Umbrella, as I do not live in Johannesburg but in Cape Town, 1600 km and a
two hour flight away, and in the first week of March, I will be busy
installing a large piece on the history of slavery in South Africa in the
Cape Town Castle.

Are you thinking of coming to Cape Town at all? It is a beautiful city, and
very much worth a visit, if you have time. Otherwise, we would certainly be
able to talk on the phone when you come to Johannesburg.

Let me know if you are able to come,

All best wishes

Sue Williamson

To Sue Williamson,
The trip was good, normal, let’s say. When we arrived in Paris, it was
so so cold ! Ant it is still….
Thanks so much for these two days who were very important for better
understanding your work and its context.
We will soon have meetings with our friends from Egypt and we will send
you new informations as soon as we can.
I join two pictures about the dance performance we made in Joburg. I
took them in France but it gives an idea about the space in which the
performers were dancing.

à: sue williamson <suewill@iafrica.com>To Sue Williamson,How are you, first ?
Sorry for the long time without giving news. In fact, since the end on
february, i’ve been working hardly, teaching in Strasburg, also on 2
theatrical creations and a workshop in the school of art in Kinshasa.
And there was no important news about the Alexandria project.
Now we have.
I’m just coming back from egypt, where i’ve been spending one week to
talk with the Gudran team (which has created the cultural place in El
Max and will receive us) and decide together about the conditions of the
residency.
It will happen from the 10th of september, until the 1th of october2004.
Two weeks and a half of residency in situ and two days and a half of a
kind of festival during which the works will be visible in contex, in El
Max.
We will be 18 artists. 7 from « Africa », 7 from the arabic world, and 4
from france. For « Africa », except you : goddy Leye(Cameroon), Bill
Kouelany(Congo), Hervé Yamguen(Cameroon), Hervé Youmbi(Cameroon), Justus
Kyalo(Kenya), and Pathy Tsindele(RDC).
For the « arabic world » : Hussein Beydoun (Lebanon), Hicham
Benohoud(Morocco) and five egyptian artists including Nabil Boutros
(photographer).
For France, Antoine d’Agata (photographer), Eléonore Hellio (networks
artist), Francois Duconseille and I(scenographers and visual artists).
About the specific conditions of the residency all the artists will
receive in the next days a complete information from Gudran an us.But in fact i realized that i never asked you formally if your are
interested to join us for the residency.

The two days in Cape Town were a strong experience for me, clearly too
short, but i think we will start to have the opportunity to build things
in south african area, because the new responsible for the Maputo frensh
cultural center, is the guy which is actually directing the Kinshasa
ccf. An we work together in a very close way. It means we will start
working together next year in Maputo.

Last point, i’m actually having discussions in the school of decorative
arts in strasburg (where i’m teaching) about the idea to invite you for
an exhibition and workshop (we have a good gallery inside the school)
probalby next year. We dont have yet an answer about this, because its a
long and collective process, and also we are waiting for a new director
which will take the final decision. But i tell you this because in fact
i dont know if you are interested by this kind of proposition, which we
would have to discuss precisely, of course.

Bien amicalement
J-Christophe Lanquetin

charge.

Portes toi bien et salues les amis

De: jiceehell@noos.fr
à: info@gudran.com
Copies à: f.duconseille@cegetel.netGuys,
Many things :
1. Hussein and Bill cancelled. Not free at that period.
Antoine and Nabil will come only for 2 weeks. And from now, no news about Goddy Leye.
2. As we see things from here, we are now very scared about the time. 7 weeks before and no plane tickets reserved, when you know how things are going on with plane compagnies ! and the problems every end of month to find places on the planes ! And Its imperative that Francois, Eleonore and I we must be in paris the 2th of september. And for most of the artists, the fact they dont have news at that time, makes them wondering what happens. An they wait us to take care of them, to be precise with that. Some
of them are famous, and they are used to precise informations and organisation.
3. No news about the egyptian artists. I dont understand that.
How can we think about a global group if we work so separately !
4. No technical informations for Eleonore. It makes her quite frightened. She needs to know, even though the news are not yet clear. Maybe she can help, give informations…
5. The per diem can’t change. Its very important, for many people to get that amont of money. You must know that they really choose to come (because we spoke longly with them, because they are curious…), and it means they dont catch money in other works during that time. They know the project is not very rich one, and they accept it. But if you change that amont, things will become really difficult for plenty of them.
6. Partnerships : with library and with the garage : to do what ? U speak about this, but what is the deal ? If u want to organize precise things during the residency, you should explain it, to know if its a possible deal with the artists.
7. Other partners : absolutely too late, in France now. In general that kind of things, in France, we ask for it 1 year, maybe more, before ! Thats european way ! The only partner who can still help is ccf in egypt. We have no news from cairo ccf, maybe you should phone them.
8. About the text :
– Its ok for your part, no discussion on the way you talk about your work. Just one point, no need to insist so longly on the work camps.
– about Bostachy part : i propose to change some parts of the text :
in the part : The artistic meeting in september :
As a part of Gudran’s experiment in fishermen village in El Max, we are looking forward to making an artistic activity working in a context different from ou approach in the last 3 years. During these years we were proposing what basically people needed to have in the area. With that project we want to propose a new step, we want to show them our point of view, our ideas about what creation can be. And give them the possibility to discover things. This will give us….This will be achieved by holding an artistic meeting where 15 artists from Africa, Arabic world, Egypt and France will be invited to stay and work inside the fishermen village in El Max. And after 3 weeks working freely inside the place and with people, the only demand will be to propose, through the medium of your choice, something, an act, a proposition, in context (in houses, streets, on roofs…)which is reflecting a personnal link with the area.
The propositions will be visible during a 2 or 3 days festival in the end of the residency.to explay my text :
/ I think its important to insist on the fact this is ur point of view u want to show to people. It makes things very clear.
/ its also very important to be precise about what we wait from the artists, thats why i reformulate that part. Dont speak about products (this is not arts and crafts) but speak about propositions. in that matter terms are very coded and important.

Other elements which are missing in the text :
– No informations about per diem, organisation, place to live…. people wait for this in the text.
About the place to live u should explain why we will not live inside the area, the tradition questions you spoke to me, and also the fact families are many people in small houses. U should say that to make foreigners understand. And so tell what u are preparing about the place to live (what we spoke together, Ramy). And also say we will eat inside el max. And that u have a building where people can work, spend time…
U should explain that each artist will have a specific amont of money to buy the necessary elements for his creation, but this amont will be quite little one, and if they need specific equipments they should ask before, or take it with them.

we are working like hell) here are some answers you
need and ask for1. Hussien arrived to Egypt on last June and there was
an appointment with us to meet and speak about the
project put he didn¡|t came, call our even canceled

2. For the plane tickets there was a very long and
hard meetings with our partners for more than 10 times

(tickets, accommodation, per diem, ¡K.. ) and other
things put finally they will sign the contract with us
next week and they will deliver the money to us. After
that we will buck the tickets and send it for every
one that all and that why we were so late in bucking
the plane tickets put we already made a first bucking
and it will be confirmed after we get the money.

3. For Eleonore proposition Ramy told you before that
the only problem that was authorities agreement about
it and they will give us an answer before 15th of July
we know it is 19th of July put we have along meeting
with the authorities speaking about that put they
reject it for security matters.

4. For the Egyptian artists we already finish agreeing
with 5 artists ( in our last email we told you that we
will send you the list of the Egyptian artists names
at 20th of July and today is 19th of July ) and they
are:

„h Mohammed Soliman
„h Hany El Gewaily
„h Mohammed El Ganwby
„h Ahmed Askalany
„h Aliaa El Gerady
And we still had empty place we still searching for
the last artist ( For Rehab El Sadek she canceled and
for William in Town House we are don¡|t like his point
of view.

5. For the Per Diem it will be the same amount we
speak about it before 30 USD after along argument with
our Partners about the Budget ( relay it lasts for
more than for hours )

6. We canceled our co-operating with the Garage and
for the Library we still speaking with them and our
deal will be ( Making a presentation about Gudran and
September project )

7. For the partners we ask you to help us in finding
them may be in France no need any more for that and we
are sorry for bothering you with that because you
already busy we finished every thing here about
partnership

8. after several long meetings with the people of El
Max ( meetings last for 2 or 3 hours for two weeks )
explaining for them about the project and the
residency we get an agreement with them to except
every one here during the residency between them for
leaving in the place Ramy told you about that place in
the same area 10 min walking from our place but the
people there had only one condition which is every one
must respect there Traditions.

9. for the Text we will add the things that you say it
is important to be added for it and send it back to
you again

at the end we like you to know that we didn¡|t take
any single day as a holiday since you left for two
reasons and they are

1. we need to do many meetings with every one to make
them under stand and that takes time and a lot of work

2. We are working on several directions in the same
time

„h Founders
„h People of EL Max
„h Partners
„h Authorities
„h International affairs
This is not an explanation for Delay and
YOU MUST CONCEDER IT AS OUR CONDITIONS HERE AND WE
HOPE THAT YOU RESPECT IT

Copies à: Jean-Christophe LanquetinDears Sameh & Rami, thank you for your very detailed answer, it is now for us very clear and we
appreciate your determination, we are sorry of being anxious last week.I’m trying to treat point by point all the questions

1. Hussein…. in fact he is accepted for a one year formation in the art
school in Strasbourg. The cession will begin at the early of september, so
it is the reason why he cancelled. It’s a shame for us, because we like very
much his reson and his work but it is very simple to understand the choise
he did.

2. For the plane tickets… it is very important to deal with each artist
dates of travel to be shure of their disponibilities… by exemple JC will
comming from Kenya (his ticket is still payed) but he need a fly from cairo
to Paris only for return…. me I’m not shure now to can come for the 10
because I have to manage many work in France before coming, I decide next
week my exact departure date….

2b. For French’s ticket do you think to work whit the CCFA, you know they
are ready to pay them, it’s a good opportunity. It will be good to contact
them again and the CCF Cairo to.

3. For Eleonore…. it’s a shame autorities refuse, but it’s not the end,
she had thought about other possibilities of interventions (3D or connection
with low flow)… it’s important you contact her to decide and treat all her
material questions, she is waiting for that.

4. For the Egyptian artists… ok, I am a beat sad don’t working whit Rehab
El Sadek I like her work and think that it was a good choise…but « show »
must go on

5. For the Per Diem… bravo to succes of keeping them

6 & 7 no problem for us

8. traditions… be shure that we shall be vigilant to preserve people
traditions and the solution you found for living seem to be a good one.

9. ok

BE SHURE WE RESPET ALL YOUR WAY OF WORKING, WE UNDERSTAND NOW BETTER AND WE
ARE VERY GLAD OF THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING ON

VERY FRIENDLY

à: T(…)Hi, my dear,
I’m back in France (since the 2th of october but so many work since that
time), after 3 weeks in egypt, in El Max, as you know.
El Max residency happened, with15 artists from 6 countries (cameroon,
egypt, morocco, france, kenya, south africa, senegal), very high level
and professionnal and strongly supporting that kind of process, from the
12th to the 30th of september. It was a very interesting and complex
story (maybe you heard about it). We were in a strong confrontation with
the context, in all its dimensions, and I discovered in real how the
situation is actually difficult, I would say quite hard, in Egypt. But
the relashionship between artists, and with inhabitants was very intense
and interesting, people were happy and curious to meet us, to see us
every day in their area. At the same time, they clearly were taking care
about what we were doing and sometimes they said no to our propositions.
But it was part of the game and something happened between them and us,
which could be continued, we would like to.
Whe were all the time confrontated to the limits which does exist
everywhere actually, and with the fact people are scared all the time to
have problems with the authorities, so they dont take any risk. Some
projects were refused by the authorities, some others impossible, and
even one was brocken (and it was mine, by people linked to a radical
muslim, it seems…). Many strange situations of work happened to me
through this. But also we ended many projects, and they are now in the
area. Some of them are very beautiful, and we know now, after 2 weeks
back home, there is enough elements for an exhibition and a book, which
will talk about the all process in all its dimensions.
Its difficult in a few words to let you understand how this adventure
pushed all of us until our limits, in a very interesting way, all the
artists. And also how the situation we were living there, every day,
individually et collectivelly seems for us very symptomatic of the
reality in Egypt today (and that’s what we would like also to talk in
the exhibition).
It would be better if we could meet.
The relationships with Gudran were difficult, but i see it now also as a
part of the context. And I wouldnt even say Gudran as a group because
many members of Gudran made their best to help and tryed make things
happen until the end (especially Ramy who was absolutely professionnal).
But they didnt know really (they are social workers, not artists) what
is the reality of an artistic work, they didnt feel the priorities. But
the main problem was with Sameh, as person and also Aliaa, but with
Aliaa its a kind of mystery because, as link between Douala and El Max,
she should have been here with us, all the time, and in fact we didnt
see her !
And Sameh is really a problematic person, but i’d prefer to talk with u
in real about this. I made it with H, and with egyptian artists,
and really his attitude was very strange, from the beginning to the end.In fact, in the beginning of the residency, Gudran tryed to anticipate
what is forbidden in Egypt, and especially in El Max, by forbidding us
things, places where to go…, and surrounding us, as in an organized
tour ! You can imagine the effects !The 30th the oppening of the exhibition didn’t happen in El Max. Gudran
had organized nothing (almost), and the works of the artists were in a
situation of fragility, impossible to show them. But we, all of the
artists, decided to continue working, and performing until the end of
the residency, 2 days after, and we made it with the support of Ramy and
some others members of Gudran. And it was good to do that. Askalany’s
garden and sculpture, Sue Williamson painted walls until the moment she
took the car to go to the airport, Goddy Leye and the Cameroonians
stayed there also, I was drawing my installation in the café, Francois
made a performance, very beautiful, Antoine d’Agata oppened his photo
studio until the last minute too.
That’s why we think an exhibition must happen in Egypt, strongly linked
to El Max, and that exhibition will be the real ending of the residency.
An exhibition and a book. And the book will be published by « Editions de
l’Oeil », Gael Teicher, who joined us in El Max. We had meetings with
B, whith H, with W, and others about this.
We are now in that moment we have to write a project for the exhibition
and the book.

I think it is important to let you know about this because you are part
of the origin of this project, first link.
Really i’d like to talk direcly with you, to understand better certain
points.
Will you be in B(…) in the next weeks, especially beginning of
november, because i’ll work in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and so travel
there… I can stop in Bxl to see you.
kisses

Something happened, and maybe, is still happening.

On me
Puis, l’histoire s’apaise. Sameh m’a dit que nous risquons
l’interdiction. Elle n’arrive pas. Le lendemain je lui repose la
question, risquons nous l’interdiction ? Il me dit que non, que ca va
aller.
