Ouakam

If the choice of Ouakam as the area for the residency is related to the settlement of the Cie 1er Temps, which is developing there a long term project around contemporary dance, this area is interesting on many levels in order to interveene as artists in the city.

Located at the west of Dakar, Ouakam is a former Lebous fishermens village which has become a residential suburb of Dakar. Two kinds of urbanities are one next to the other, that of an ancient village, by the sea, and that of a residencial suburb, with the peculiarity of being located at the foot of the african renaissance statue, which contributes strongly to the mutation of the neighborhood. New housing projects are being built in connection with this monument.

The district, through the many layers that constitute it, offers multiple scenarios for urban interventions: the relation with the sea and the fishing village but also the contemporary stories of boats leaving for Europe; its location in the suburbs of a major city; the presence of Renaissance africaine statue, an issue in itself, and a motion for the transformation of the urban environment (gentrification), but interrupted, incomplete.

Spaces in the area are auspicious to artists interventions: maze of alleyways in the old village, areas, empty walls, sand everywhere, the proportions of the buildings and also the relative withdrawal of urban signs, seem to carry a silent and soft urban theatricality.
