El Max

Que voit-on lorsqu’on arrive à El Max ? // What do we see when we are arriving in El Max ?

// How are we developing our way of observating in such a urban environment ? It takes time in order to « clarify » a point of view. The question of the relation we have to places where we are working is complex to speak about.

// We are working where our partners, artists, are living and working. It is not a question of esthetics or related to poverty (for instance), which are influencing our choices, but the relation to people. It’s a way to go beyond appearences. Even if the strength of a urban space like El Max is interesting.

// This question of the point of view is particularly interesting in El Max. We are allowed to take pictures only under certain angles : no pictures from the petrochimical installations, no photos from the militaries installations, no photos from the sea front (military zone), no pictures outside the « official » area… And we are in Egypt and in Egypt it is risky to take pictures which are not giving a « good image » (for instance it’s a risk to take pictures from rubishes). The El Max area is completely double face. You can take pictures which are very « postcard », and move a bit the camera, and the picture is becoming completely trash.
